Department & City Information

The Evansville, Indiana Police Department is located in the extreme Southwestern portion of Indiana on the banks of the Ohio River. The police department is a fully accredited law enforcement agency, dedicated to a community oriented policing program. The department includes the operation of three Crime Prevention offices, and serves an area of 41 square miles, covering 575 miles of city streets, and has a total authorized strength of 285 sworn officers and 35 civilian employees. The department is divided into four major divisions;  Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Administrative and Support Services. Those divisions are broken down into 18 specialized units which cover all areas of law enforcement necessary to serve the City of Evansville and its 130,000 citizens.

It is the goal of the City of Evansville Police Department and the Evansville Police Merit Commission to recruit the most qualified persons, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin or disability, to serve the citizens of
Evansville as police officers. Hiring requirements are based on job-related criteria, taking into consideration the knowledge, personal attributes, skills and training required to perform the job tasks, so as to further the principle of equal employment opportunity.

Basic Requirements

1. United States Citizen.
2. Must be 21-35 years of age at time of application.
3. Have a high school diploma or GED* certificate.
4. Have no convictions of a felony criminal violation.
5. Have no conviction of domestic violence or a domestic violence related offense, either misdemeanor or felony.
6. Must be of good moral character.
7. Possess a valid driver's license from current state of residence.
8. Have an Honorable discharge from the military. (if applicable)
9. Must pass mandatory drug screening.
10. Have uncorrected vision at least 20/100 & correctable to 20/30 & ability to distinguish red, yellow and green.
11. Must be able to pass a physical ability assess test.
12. Must be able to pass a competitive written exam.
13. Must submit to in-depth background investigation; polygraph, psychological testing and medical examination.
14. Must agree to and sign an employment contract post job offer.
(*)Applicants with GED certificate must have either 30 semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university w/ 2.0 or better GPA or a minimum of 2 years of military service.

Applicant Screening Process

The Evansville Police Department's Applicant Process may consist of, but is not limited to, the following evaluations which take approximately six months to complete:

1. A complete written entry level examination
2. Assessment center exercises and structured oral interview before a sworn police board
3. Structured oral interview before the Police Merit Commission board

Applicant scores will be compiled from the above evaluations which will comprise an eligibility list that will be in descending order from highest to lowest passing scores.

Upon an estimated projection of future vacancies, the department will extend the assessed number of "conditional" job offers to persons on the eligibility list. At that time, the following evaluations will be completed:

1. A physical ability assessment test
2. In-depth background investigation
3. Polygraph examination
4. Psychological examinations and interview with clinical psychologist
5. Complete medical examination including vision, hearing and mandatory drug screening

If all evaluations are successfully completed, the applicants will be sworn in as probationary police officers, providing the department has available vacancies. The eligibility list will be valid for two (2) years from the date of certification. The Evansville Police Department fills vacancies from the eligibility list twice a year. Applicant screening processes for the department are always conducted every two years in the odd year.

New Officer Training

Newly sworn officers will be on probation for one year. The State of Indiana and the Evansville Police Department provide all the necessary training to those candidates who qualify for employment to the department. Included in the training will be a 15 week basic law enforcement course at the Southwestern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy located here in Evansville. Upon graduation from the academy, probationary officers will receive a 5 weeks Officers Training School conducted by the Evansville Police Department Field Training Unit. During the remainder of the probationary period, new officers will continue to participate in the Field Training Program with rotations throughout the department and working each shift, beat and sector on the street.

The Evansville Police Department continues to train and educate officers throughout their careers. During the spring and fall of each year, all officers of the department attend In-Service training to update, renew and/or improve procedures and techniques involving law enforcement. The department also continues to send officers for advanced and/or specialized training and provides a College Reimbursement for those officers who wish to further their education.
