Hit and Run Unit

The Hit and Run office is located at Police Headquarters, Room 130. Hours of operation: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

If you have questions or information regarding a Hit & Run accident you can contact an Investigator by calling (812) 436-7941 or (812) 436-7942.

The Hit & Run Unit consists of two officers that conduct follow-up investigations of hit and run accidents. This unit investigates nearly 1000 Hit & Run reports a year.

In addition to their hit and run duties the officers in the unit also work as police K9 handlers. One officer handles a dual-purpose police K-9 (patrol/narcotics detection) and the other handles the department’s explosive detection K-9. One of these officers is also a member of the department’s Hazardous Devices Unit as well as being the Alarm Coordinator for the department.

If you are involved in a Hit & Run Accident or Witness one please try to obtain a license plate number. License plate numbers and a driver’s description are the best information to help us find the suspect in a Hit & Run Accident.
