Evansville Police Department
Latino Outreach Program
In response to the city’s growing Latino population, the department has created an outreach program that focuses on providing information to residents on the way local government agencies work. The programs are offered in English and Spanish and the topics range from interacting with police during investigative stops to the various units of the department and how they work. Future topics will include information on other city agencies and services.
The program is held monthly after the Spanish mass at Nativity Catholic Church. The church provides a luncheon and attendees are encouraged to bring the whole family. The goal is to both educate, and open the lines of communication between our Spanish speaking residents and local government agencies. We hope to reduce the fear of crime, as well as the fear of the police. Crime effects everyone, and increased public safety will benefit all citizens. It is the mission of the Evansville Police Department to partner with the community to reduce the fear and incidence of crime. The program is still in development and officers are finding that there is much they can learn from their audience. Some of the information will be used to assist in developing trainng for officers in the future.
